What is Faecal Microbiota Transplant
Faecal Microbiota Transplant (shortened to FMT) is the transplant of gut bacteria from a healthy donor in to the gut of a person with a compromised microbiome. There are various reasons why FMT is used and whilst a relatively newly recognised form of treatment, faecal transplants are not a new treatment method. The gut microbiome is quickly being recognised as important as other organs in the body – and much like other types of transplants, this is taking healthy, living organisms and implanting them in to someone in need.
The most common use for FMT is to treat Clostridium Difficile Infection (also known as C.Diff or CDI), which is an antibiotic resistant and potentially fatal bacteria. FMT has a 98% efficacy rate in the treatment of Clostridium Difficile Infection.
FMT is also showing solid results in the treatment of Post Infectious IBS and is used for various other gut microbiome imbalances.
