Perianal Crohn’s disease
Perianal Crohn’s disease, also known simply as Perineal Crohn’s, is an autoimmune disease that mainly affects the anal region of patients. This condition may cause skin tags, abscesses, perineal fistulas, and fissures.
It’s estimated that at least 25% of individuals with Crohn’s disease may develop Perineal Crohn’s. And, similar to other forms of Crohn’s disease, Perineal Crohn’s is a chronic condition with no known cure.
However, with proper treatment, Perineal Crohn’s patients may be able to control their symptoms.
Symptoms of Perineal Crohn’s
The following are the typical symptoms of Perianal Crohn’s disease.
Anal bleeding
Pus-like liquid coming out of the anus
Excessive bowel urgency
Bowel incontinence
Over time, Perineal Crohn’s may lead to more serious symptoms. These include:
Fissures: These are small tears in the walls of the anal canal
Abscesses: These are small sac-like structures filled up with puss
Fistulas: These are tunnels that form between the inside of the anus and the skin outside
Ulcers: These are open sores that may form near the anus
If you have any of these symptoms, get in touch with a gastroenterologist immediately.
Treatments for Perineal Crohn’s
Typically, treatment for Perianal Crohn’s disease involves managing and reducing the symptoms. The type of treatment a patient receives depends on the severity of the symptoms.
These treatments may include:
Antibiotics
These medications may need to be taken to ease inflammation and treat any abscesses.
Immunosuppressive medications
Immunosuppressants are a long-term medication option that may help reduce the inflammation caused by Perineal Crohn’s.
Surgery
Through surgery, doctors may be able to treat many symptoms of Perianal Crohn’s; for example, by removing inflamed tissue and closing fistulas.
Dietary changes
Switching to a diet that makes digestion easier may help treat the symptoms of Perineal Crohn’s. This, however, may not work for everyone.
