Are you experiencing nerve pain in the anus?

Experiencing discomfort in the rectal area may not always be alarming, but it’s understandable to want to treat it. However, if the pain persists, it can be hard to ignore. Sometimes the cause of rectal pain is evident, but other times, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of this condition.

Pain in the anal region may not always be a cause for concern, however, as it may be a symptom of a more serious medical problem.

Potential causes

Here are a few possible causes of nerve pain in the anus:

Haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids, commonly known as “piles” refer to inflamed veins found in the rectum or anus. They can either occur internally within the rectum or externally, outside the body near the anus.

Anal abscess

The emergence of an anal abscess can cause intense pain, as it involves the accumulation of pus near the anus. Typically, these abscesses are caused by an infection stemming from anal glands.

Anal fissure

An anal fissure is a tiny cut or tear in the moist and delicate tissue that lines the anus. This condition can cause intense pain and discomfort, particularly during bowel movements.

Levator Ani Syndrome

Levator Ani Syndrome occurs when the pelvic floor muscles undergo spasms, which can lead to discomfort in the anus. This condition is linked to injuries in the pelvic and abdominal regions.

How to treat the pain

The treatment for anal pain differs depending on what may be causing it. However, here are some things patients may try to reduce the pain:

Take over-the-counter pain relievers

For mild pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can be used.

Use a sitz bath

Soaking the anal area in warm water for 15-20 minutes several times a day can help reduce swelling and ease pain.

Increase fibre and water intake

Constipation can worsen anal pain. A diet rich in fibre and plenty of water, however, can help prevent constipation.

These treatments may not be suitable for everyone, so only attempt these after speaking with a gastrointestinal specialist.
